Welcome back to the Summer Term. The year is passing so quickly and I can't believe this is the children's last term in the infants!
This is a busy term with lots of different activities. We are beginning a new history topic exploring important nurses in the past, including Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole.
In Science we will be learning about what plants need to grow healthily and exploring habitats and food chains. In Maths we will be learning more about fractions and telling the time. In English we will be exploring traditional tales and reading stories by the same author.
Welcome back to Spring Term 2. We hope you had a restful and enjoyable half term.
This term after loving our Great Fire of London work in History we are now focusing on London in Geography exploring landmarks and features of the capital city. In our Design Technology work we will be making a fire engine as part of our vehicles topic. We will be exploring wheels and axles to make our fire engine move.
Reading
Two reading books will be sent home each Monday. Please continue to support your child with their reading regularly, so many children are reading with much greater fluency and speed so this term we move our focus to understanding the text and answering questions about what has been read. You could support your child at home by asking them questions about what they have read and asking them to find where in the text it tells them the answer. Please send your children’s Reading Record book into school each day to enable teachers to record when we have read with you child.
Jumpers, Cardigans and Water Bottles
Please remember to clearly label all jumpers and cardigans and ensure your child brings a water bottle to school each day.
Snack
Please remember that £6 is due at the beginning of every half term to pay for your child's snack. Children receive a fruit snack in the morning break and in the afternoon, we provide a variety of healthy snacks throughout the week and a treat on Friday.
If you have chosen not to participate in the snack scheme and wish to provide a snack instead please ensure that it is a healthy food choice such as fruit or a cereal bar.
Homework
Spellings and maths homework will be available each week on Purple Mash. This will be posted on a Monday. The children will then be tested on these spellings the following Monday. Whilst we continue to learn these spellings during the school week it is very helpful if children are also learning these at home. Some of the rules and spelling patterns we are learning in Year 2 are tricky and lots of practise helps!
P.E.
This half term, P.E. sessions will take place each Tuesday and Thursday. Children should come into school wearing their P.E. clothes with a school jumper or cardigan and appropriate footwear. We are lucky to have PDS coaching on a Thursday this half term, I know the children will be excited about this.
As always if you have any questions or concerns please don't hesitate to get in touch.
Year 2
Mrs Bedwell's Class
Welcome to Year 2B!
It has been a pleasure having the children back in school. They have settled well into Year 2 and are becoming more familiar with the change in routines. Our first few weeks are focussed on ensuring the children are happy, safe and ready to learn. We are looking forward to a busy and happy year.
Our first topic in the Autumn Term is 1960's focusing on life in Southport as this was when our school was built.
General Information
Contact Details
If you have updated your phone, or recently moved, please update your contact details at the school office as soon as possible, this assists us greatly to keep our files up to date.
Medical Conditions
A quick reminder -if your child has a medical condition that staff need to know about, please inform school as soon as possible. If your child requires an inhaler, or any other medicine, please make sure it has been returned to school, and is not out of date.
P.E.
We will have P.E. on a Tuesday and a Thursday this half term. Please ensure your child comes to school wearing their P.E. kit on these days each week. Children should wear their P.E. kit with black pumps or trainers and their school jumper/cardigan over the top. Assuming the weather is good we will do our PE lessons outside.
Reading
The children will receive two reading books every Monday. Please try to read each day with your child, even if it is only a couple of pages, and note this down in their Reading Record, along with any comments you wish to add. When supporting your child’s reading, please spend time discussing the setting, characters and key words from the story to further their understanding of the text. We will change your child’s reading books the following Monday, if you have noted down that both books are completed.
Please try to send your child’s book bag into school each day if you can, as this will enable us to note in their Reading Record when they have read with a member of our Year 2 team.
We will begin sending spelling homework home on Monday 26th September. Homework will be set on the VLE, please take time to spend just 5 minutes each day to practise spelling the words set. It really makes a big difference to helping children remember the words.
Jumpers, Cardigans and Water Bottles
Please remember to clearly label all jumpers and cardigans and ensure your child brings a bottle of water to school each day.
Snack
The children are welcome to bring a snack to school for morning and afternoon break. Please ensure that these snacks are healthy! The children are provided with fruit for morning break and those who take part in the school snack scheme will also receive a healthy snack in the afternoon. The school snack scheme is £6 for the half term or £1 each week.
We are really looking forward to an exciting term in Year 2.
Mrs Bedwell 😊
